honda auto parts : "mitch" wrote in message...> Well guys, we'vebeaten this one to death. I think most of us will agree,Bullwinkle hit the nail on the head. My new 2002 Explorer is aheavy duty vehicle, capable of SAFELY towing my 2900 lb. tent trailer, plus loads of camping gear and a few adults. Those car-based SUV's are not. If I wanted a luxury car ride, Iwould've purchased a Lexus sedan. For those of you knocking the 2002 Explorer, I have a question;how many miles have you driven one? And what, exactly, wereyou towing?I'm curious - how does the MDX offer proven reliability if this is the first year it came out?MDX has a 4 year warranty - Ford has 3. There is meaning to this.Companies don't offer better warranties on vehicles if they don't haveconfidence in them. Vehicles like these are expensive to repair. When theexplorer warranty is out in 36months, I'd be shi$$ing in my pants. I'd feelpretty good in the acura, and would still feel comfortable w/ it even afterthe warranty is out.As far as using a car as a wagon, as opposed to a truck as a minivan, someof you are forgetting that you virtually always get 4wd w/ the truck, andnow you can easily seat 7 w/ these 3rd row seats. The only 4wd vehiclesyou're going to get are the subies, and volvoes. They won't seat 7, and Idon't care for either manufacturer.
honda auto parts : Remember, though, that you will be paying about $5,000 MORE for an Acura MDXvs a similarly equipped Explorer LTD. Acura can afford to offer an extrayear warranty in that respect. Also, don't forget how some manufacturer'streat "warranty's". Acura is notorious for still trying to charge thecustomer at least something even for warranty repairs. My son had an Acuracar that had a radiator leak. We had to fight and fight to get it coveredunder warranty as there was some fine print about not covering "radiatorleaks". This was a manufacturer flaw in which many other vehicles the sameyear had this problem. At first they wanted $600+ to fix it, but after a lotof hassle we settled for $150 to cover "labor". As well, Acura dealers willput the screws to you for any shop work. Price the 30k mile maintenance"special" for example. You'll pay a LOT more for owning an Acura MDX overthe years than you will an Explorer. I owned 2 Explorers over 5 years anddoubted I spent even a $100 on any repairs....Also, check out some of the MDX news groups. You'll find unhappy ownersthere as well. honda auto parts : JM - you're right about the extra price does buy extra warranty... BUT, Istill think at the upper trim levels of Exp, vs MDX, MDX is probably abetter deal for those that don't need the towing capability of the Exp.They're both fine vehicles, and I guess theres really no point to thearguments that have been going back & forth. As has been stated, you'recomparing apples to oranges. At the lower price levels, the Explorer isprobably "worth it," price wise, but I think there are nicer all aroundvehicles at the higher prices. Ford definately cut corners, as many postshave stated.I hope they're reading all of these posts. I think they they have themakings of a super vehicle w/ this Explorer. Its a shame they cut corners. If Fords designers had more control, you'd see the vehicle you really want.I've read they make $10K on each of these vehicles. They sure must be losingmoney elsewhere...I have a 92 Acura Legend that needs it's radiator fixed for the secondtime; the 92s (and maybe other years) had leaky radiators.. It has justover 60k miles on it (it was my Mom's car and she didn't drive it much). Also the gas struts that hold the hood open have failed and the only placeI can find them is at the Acura dealer for $87 apiece, and it needs two.All the auto parts stores have struts listed in the catalogs but no one canorder them. The other models Pep Boys stocks are around $25, so there's noway I'm paying a ~$125 premium to Acura when I can use a 2x4. Oh, and ifyou need to change the spark plugs they cost $12 apiece (x6=$72) at auto partsstores for the NGK or Nippon Denso replacement plugs. And you're betteroff using the more expensive Honda auto tranny fluid instead of the stuffJiffy Lube/EZ Lube dispense, according to people on the Acura Legendmailing list. honda auto parts : Discovery Auto Parts Inc, 3904 Blue Star Highway, Holland, MI 494231-888-858-5711I came across this used parts place on the web. Has anyone used them?Reputable or not? They say they are Honda (accord and civic) partsspecialists and the guy quoted me a fairly good price on a front cornerlight for my 86 Accord.Just out of curiosity, what was the price quote? I know that it is about$53 from hparts.com and $5-20 on junkyard (depending on did they remove itor you did it yourself). So, what did they quote? They said that they only had that part new right now -- no used. They quoted$49.50 plus shipping. I had gotten similar quotes from USED parts dealers inAtlanta. I also went to a few pull-your-own places which would have been muchcheaper, but all of those wrecks (over 25!) had been front-end collisions withno salvageable lighting.Do you know the official Honda part number for the front passenger side cornerlight (the one with both the parking light and turn signal)? Mine got totallyshattered and the part number is no longer readable. Thanks. honda auto parts : I know it is unusual for a representative of the company about whosereputation you are inquiring, but I am in an unusual position. The owners ofDiscovery Auto Parts, Cal and Mark Van Lente, both were students of mine (Iam a retired school teacher), their parents were also teachers in mydistrict, so I have known the family for thirty years. I am not exaggeratingwhen I say there are few families with more integrity! It would really blowme away if I were told they were even suspected of something dishonest. When Mark asked me to represent Discovery Auto Parts on the internet and tothe community, I thought, well, the used parts business is sometimes shady, but with these brothers trying to do the used Honda parts business the way itshould be done, and with their integrity, I have no qualms about being partof the organization. So Jeff, for what it is worth, that is my perspective concerning your questionabout the reputation of Discovery Auto Parts.-----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your OwnThanks for the input.
