cheap car tyres : But hey - you should "Always look on the bright side of life.....""T-Boy" wrote in message...Your mother was a hampster and your father smelled of elderberries!I wave my private parts at your aunties!--"If you not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate"--It would depend if Col Jr. has a bit of mechanical aptitudeand wants to do his own work on it... a $500 dunger mayneed $500 worth of work done on it each year, but if Col Jr.does the work himself he'd get at least that value in learning(as much as anyone can put a monetary value to knowledge...)and not having to pay a mechanic $50+ an hour must be abonus...Please send replies to New Zealand instead of Zanzibar.Sorry, but the spam is just getting a little too much...Cheap car story? I have a heap of them. I always have a cheap car as asecond car. How about 10 years ago when I bought a Worsley 18/85 (theluxury version of the humble Austin Landcrab 1800) named Wonderful Wayne for$700. I got five years comfortable motoring with only a replacementgenerator and gearbox flex-plate. Total cost of repairs $90. Big ends wentin the end but still cheap transport. After that was a Mitsubishi SapporoTurbo called Tubby from Turners for $650. Drove that for 2 years until itcracked the head and sold it for $250. Currently have a Mitsubishi Tredia(Trevor the Tredia) bought for $550 from the Kaikoura Marine PreservationSociety which has done 25,000km in three years including three laps of theSouth Island without buying anything for it other than a battery. Still onthe same tyres, but it failed a warrant yesterday when the sun visor brokeoff in the inspector's hand. I also have a 1967 Austin 1100 with 47,000miles that I bought 18 months ago for $270 with rego and warrant. My sisterborrows when she was in Chch for extended times for medical treatment andhas put 5,500 miles (8800 km) with only a set of brake pads. These cars havealways been a back-up car but when you live out of the city like I do ANDhave lotsa friends and family from all over the world use them, they getfairly well used. I could buy a $5000 second car and in a year get $1000less even if I never used it, or I can buy a $500 and be prepared to drop itat a wreckers yard when something breaks. Modern cars don't break as oftenas cars built 30 years ago. If you look after the motors with fresh oil (andfresh cheap oil is better than unchanged high-quality oil), modern car'sengines can readily do 300-500,000 km. You just have to look at all thecountry repair garages that have folded in the last ten years.There... that's my bit... YMMV

cheap car tyres : 1998 Ford Festiva GLXI. I would Goodyear Ventura's, but they are tooexpensivePhoto's and Information from Wanneroo (Barbagallo) Raceway, including SportsSedans. From: ()Subject: Re: Cheap Tyres Newsgroups: Date: 2001-04-01 01:36:04 PST In article says...I think the cheapest place I have found for tyres is a place called AAA tyre factory. They're at Guildford. Phone 96813940."Bob Horgan" wrote in message...KMart are too expensive! Have you thought of retreads?I need 2 new tyres for my girlfriends 99 Pulsar. Looking for 175 (/65?) 14inch tyres. Does anybody know where I can find a pair cheaply? Thanks in advance.Cheers,Dave.You CAN'T go cheap with tyres if you wanted to live a little bit longer...don'tknow how come people can spend big on themselves but skimp on little thingslike your car's tyres and brakes when they could determine whether things willbe a close call or having cops closing off streets just because your carcrashed. Oh, buy a safety triangle too (but ask Jeremy for the BMW part numberthough and it's $15 I recall.)oh god. I swear he should go into manufacturing for himself on thosetriangles and cram them down everyones throats.

cheap car tyres : What are people's thoughts regarding cheap tyres, Debica for instance, versus Michelins, Dunlops, Yokohamas etc? Is it really worth paying 100quid plus for a tyre you could get for 35?I'm wondering if there are any serious performance benefits on an ordinaryroadgoing car, after all they're all made of rubbery stuff and one treadpattern doesn't cost more to manufacture than another.I asked this of a tyre fitter when I bought a Debica the other day, and hesaid the Michelins I currently have on the front were probably the besttyre on the market. But how can he know this? Hearsay? The fact thatthey're expensive & therefore 'must be good'? I'd love to know if itreally makes much difference.Huge, huge differences! When you think about it, the tyres are the only thing keeping your car onthe road so its well worth the money trying to keep it there!More expensive tyres have better grip, better water dispersion, betterrigidity, are quieter and last longer.Don't skimp on tyres or you'll regret it :)Does this mean that if I pay more for the same tyre next door they willbe better, or is your statement just a little bit too simple?

cheap car tyres : On your Audi 90? Michelins. It's a fast car and fairly heavy. They'rethe best compromise between wear and grip.Pirelli P6000s are a good choice, they handle water very well and wearwell, dry grip wasn't (I felt) that good.Avoid Falkens at all costs. They wore down to nothing in 8,000 miles onmy Volvo 480, and I'm not a fast driver by any means. It always used to be that Dunlop were great in the dry, I always foundthem a little noisy (screeching on corners... but that was a long timeago) and only got them because they were the only tyres available for aTD-rimmed MG Metro...Of course, you could ignore that, but tyres are the only thing betweenyour car and the road... -- Edward Scissorhands |\ _,,,---,,_ Bunburyist, Goth, Citroenist. I'd say its worth it for the grip you get

cheap car tyres : Well you all make a good case for the expensive tyres so I guess there mustbe something in it! Cheapies on the back though, seeing as it tendstowards understeer anyway, and my main problem is lack of traction. Idrove an Astra GTE with similar size tyres to mine and it'd pull away noproblem, but in the Audi it is difficult (tempted to say impossible) tomove off briskly without wheelspin, which is doubtless a contributingfactor in wearing tyres out so fast. The one (and only) time my girlfrienddrove it she skidded halfway across the road pulling out of a driveway... A lot of the Audi's extra weight will be in the engine, over the frontwheels, so it surprises me the Astra should get such good grip. Bettertyres perhaps? Astra mk2s are not renowned for their handling. How much money we talking for brand new Michelins or Pirellis? The currentfront tyres were part worns, very cheap, and to be fair they were great atfirst - just didn't last long. However the thread on changing a tyre'sdirection partway through its life has me wondering whether it's such agood idea. I probably can't justify the cost of 2 new ones though. Thoughts?
